A phyborg disco club exploring female gender expression. A disco DJ takes you through the night alongside poetry, moving image and live phyborg dancers.

Upon entry to the club, guests make a choice of a disco sparkle or Medusas snake to be stamped onto their hands. Phyborg characters where them on their foreheads.
Medusa

Medusa was the clubs logo and appeared as a flashing symbol on the walls. In research for this project I looked at female representation in methology where there are many examples of evil/ conniving characters such as sirens, banshees and witches . Medusa stood out to me as her story is often misunderstood. Unknown to many, medusa was a goddess who caught the attention of Neptune (Poseidon) and in some accounts was raped by him, in revenge Neptunes wife Minerva turns Medusa’s beautiful head of hair into snakes. Instead of Poseidon being punished for his actions the victim Medusa was turned into a gorgon and cast as the villian. In my painting I included eves apple at the top of her head to signify the link to women who are seen to tempt men into evil.
The showgirl A short film I shot which was projected onto an inflatable ‘disco ball’ in the club.
when directing and filming I explored a ‘showgirl’ presenter character whose appearance was maticulously retouched as she was made to create glamorous poses on a plinth. she had to be pristine and poised demonstrating a kind of object like perfection which reflects societal standards of women in media. Parts of the showgirl were cropped and projected onto the ‘disco ball’.
